What is iTero?
To understand iTero, it helps to understand the basic, conventional process behind the creation of a crown or bridge.
Step 1. With a high-speed handpiece, the dentist precisely reduces an area of the tooth to be restored so that the crown can be placed in this area.
Step 2. A physical impression is taken of the area being restored as well as of your bite, using a tray filled with a putty-like material, which is left to harden in your mouth.
Step 3. Once the material sets, the tray is removed, inspected by your dentist, and packaged and sent via mail to a dental laboratory, where a technician creates your crown or bridge.
Step 4. The crown or bridge is sent to your dentist, where he or she fits the restoration in place.
The main issue that arises during the creation of crowns or bridges comes from the impression process. The fit of the patient’s crown or bridge is directly related to the quality of the impression. The existing tray and putty method can be imprecise, and often times the patient will need to have the impression retaken should problems arise. This sets the process back anywhere from 10 to 21 days. iTero replaces this imprecise method with a high-tech digital solution.
Some of the Benefits You can Expect with an iTero Impression:
Comfort: If you have ever had a conventional impression taken, you know just how uncomfortable the process is. The putty is messy, tastes extremely unpleasant, and in many patients can cause gagging. With iTero, the only thing that touches your teeth is the tip of a hand-held wand.
Greater Speed: The digital impression is complete in approximately three to five minutes–as opposed to eight to ten for conventional impressions.
Reduced Anxiety: The scanner is a compact, hand-held wand. Once your dentist begins the scanning process, it can be stopped and started as many times as necessary. So you will never be stuck with a mouth full of gook.
Accuracy: The iTero digital impression system creates an exact replica of what is in your mouth. This results in a more accurate fitting crown or bridge.
